STARS SING OUT AGAINST SEXUAL VIOLATION OF MEN

4th Feb 2011 - Lesley Garrett, Marc Almond, David McAlmont, Lea DeLaria, Ian Shaw and Hannah Waddingham will join the London Gay Men’s Chorus in an evening of song celebrating SurvivorsUK and their clients – men who have been sexually violated.

“Songs For SurvivorsUK” marks the 25th anniversary of this pioneering organisation that provides a national helpline and London based counselling services to men who have experienced sexual violation at any time in their lives.  The charity also assists the partners and carers of these men and provides links and signposting to services around the country.

James Watson, SurvivorsUK Chair of Trustees says:

“This is the first time artists of this calibre have come together to support sexually violated men.   I am immensely grateful to these outstanding performers for their generosity and their willingness to be associated with this difficult cause.  I hope that this concert will encourage people to talk more about the reality of male sexual violation and how as a society we care for these men.”

Adult male sexual assault and the abuse of male children continue to be a taboo subject in our society; in reality there are more than 10,000 rapes of men every year and over 2 million adult men living with the legacy of childhood abuse.  Yet the recent Mayor of London funding for rape crisis centres provided less than 5% support for men.  And male victims of sexual crime do not feature at all in the language of the Government or in their announced plans for sexual violation service funding.

Songs for SurvivorsUK -A Concert to celebrate 25 years of help and support for sexually violated men” is at 7pm on Sunday the 22nd May 2011 at the Cadogan Hall, London SW31X 9DQ.

I have never been able to talk about this before, I think it being anonymous, on the phone, helped me.
