Local charity Mankind presents GROOMED as part of the Brighton Fringe, to take the conversation of male sexual abuse and violence into the community.

Based on the real life experiences of Groomed’s writer, Patrick Sandford, this one-man (plus saxophone!) show weaves his childhood experience of being groomed, alongside that of a Japanese soldier and the inventor of the saxophone into a revealing and profoundly human statement.

With one in six men worldwide experiencing sexual violence or abuse in their lifetime, this means around 17,000 men and boys in Brighton and Hove are affected.

Continuously spoken about as a female-only issue, the taboo around male survivors must be broken down. Only when a safe environment for men is created can men feel empowered to speak out about their experience.

The Community Squared Project will explore society’s beliefs, perceptions and expectations around the sexual abuse of men, and develop practical initiatives to change how our community talk and think about male survivors. As part of this, GROOMED aims to create awareness through the accessible medium of theatre.

We all have a part to play in establishing this accepting environment within our community and Groomed seeks to get the conversation started.

Groomed was able to be brought to Brighton thanks to collaboration with Ingenious Purpose, a creative organisation with many years of theatrical production experience.

Groomed has been chosen as a key production in Brighton Fringe’s WINDOW Showcase – this is a show not to be missed.

Revealing. Honest. Powerful. There is no time for self-pity.

“…One of the most moving pieces I’ve ever seen. I came away educated and entertained, which is the rarest combination of experiences…” Sandi Toksvig
