SurvivorsUK is a charity providing advice, information, emotional support and counselling to adults who identify as male who have been raped, sexually assaulted and/or sexually abused at any time in their lives and to those affected by it and raises awareness about the issues.

 

MAIN PURPOSE

We are looking for someone to join our team as a Treasurer Trustee. The Treasurer will oversee the financial matters of the charity in accordance with the governing document and legal requirements and report back to the board of trustees at regular intervals.

 

MAIN DUTIES

■ Liaising with the Director of Clinical Services / Acting Chief Executive Officer and Financial Manager

■ Chairing any finance committee or working groups that may be set up and reporting back to the Board

■ Liaising with the charity’s auditors

■ Monitoring and advising on the financial viability of the charity after liaising with the charity’s auditors

■ Overseeing, in conjunction with the Director of Clinical Services / Acting Chief Executive Officer and Financial Manager, sound financial instruments for the control of the charity’s assets

■ Specifying specific financial controls to be implemented by the executive and systems and monitoring that are in place and adhered to

■ Advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan

■ Acting as a counter signatory on charity cheques and fund applications when needed

■ Maintaining sound financial management of the charities’ resources, ensuring expenditure is in line with the charities’ objects

■ Contributing to the fundraising strategy of the organisation

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

■ Specify the financial information requirements to the executive, which may include budgets, accounts, management accounts and financial statements.

■ Discuss and present financial information to the board of trustees in conjunction with the executive.

■ Act as a supplementary line of defense to ensure that the proper accounts and records are kept, ensuring financial resources are spent and invested in line with the charities’ policies, good governance, legal and regulatory requirements. Commission external assistance where appropriate.

■ Provide expert guidance in the development and implementation of financial reserves and investment policies, or draft them if appropriate.

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential skills and experience: 

■ Accountancy

■ Accountancy (part qualified)

■ Auditing

■ Bookkeeping

■ Financial management

■ Commissioning / contracting

■ Fundraising strategy

 

Desirable experience:

■ Background in a finance related role, knowledge of accounting concepts and financial controls

■ Interest and enthusiasm for men’s issues and men’s mental health

■ Prior experience of committee/trustee work.

■ Knowledge of the type of work undertaken by the organisation (not essential).

 

WHAT IMPACT THE OPPORTUNITY WILL HAVE

The treasurer will ensure that the executive maintain effective financial controls and procedures that are appropriate for the charity. This is to enable all trustees to discharge their responsibility in their position as jointly and severally responsible for the administration of the charity.

TIME COMMITMENT

■ Mostly outside office hours

■ The Board meets every 6 weeks for 2 hours.

■ The Treasurer should also make him/herself available to the executive for direct support.

■ In addition to Board Meetings, other contact – usually electronic or by telephone – will be necessary

■ The time commitment for the Treasurer is expected to be 1 day per month, on average.
