How to leave a gift in your Will to SurvivorsUK
If you have been a regular giver to SurvivorsUK or if you would like to continue to support us even after you’re gone, you may wish to give us a gift in your Will. It can also be an effective way to reduce the tax burden of your legacy.
Making a will might seem daunting, and it could be something you’ve been putting off. However, it’s the best way to make sure your wishes are carried out after you die and can bring family or loved ones a lot of comfort at a difficult time. Moreover, a Will is a way of ensuring that your loved ones are provided for after your death and you give help to those individuals/organisations you wish to benefit.
We very much hope that you will remember SurvivorsUK in your will. If you have not yet written a Will, we have suggested some wording below to help. If, however, you have already written a Will you do not need to write a new one in order to add a gift to SurvivorsUK. You can write what is known as a “codicil”.
What kind of gift can I leave to SurvivorsUK in my will?
Before you meet with your solicitor or write your will, you should consider the type of gift you’d like to leave. There are three main types of gift you can leave in your will:
A residuary gift is a percentage of your estate once any specified gifts have been made to friends and family. Many of our supporters choose to leave this type of gift because its value will be dependent on the value of your estate at any given time rather than a set amount. This provides supporters with more flexibility when deciding how to ensure that their loved ones are well looked after first and foremost.
A pecuniary gift is a specific amount of money. It’s worth bearing in mind that the effects of inflation mean that this type of gift is likely to lose value over time and may end up being less than you initially intend.
A specific gift is a gift of a specified item – such as a personal possession, land, buildings or stocks and shares.
Why should I leave a gift in my Will to SurvivorsUK?
Gifts left to SurvivorsUK are absolutely vital to our work. Since the majority of our services are fee-free, we rely on the generosity of donors and funders to help us provide life-changing support to male and non-binary survivors. They enable us to run essential services, including our National Male and Non-binary Survivors Helpline. They help us to expand our work and look for new ways to tackle the issues facing survivors, such as depression, homelessness and isolation. By leaving a gift in your will, you can help us ensure that no survivor need struggle alone, even after you’re gone.
Suggested wording for clause in a Will
This suggested legal wording will assist your solicitor in drawing up or amending your will to include your gift to help our vital work.
For a residuary gift i.e. percentage of your estate:
“I give x% of the residue of my estate to SurvivorsUK Ltd (Registered Charity No. 1077484) of Unit F, The Bagel Factory, 22 White Post Lane, London, England, E9 5SZ (or subsequent address) for its general charitable purposes. I further direct that the receipt of the Chief Executive or other proper officer of the said charity for the time being shall be a full and sufficient discharge for the said gift.”
For a gift of a specific sum of money or item:
“I give the sum of £___ (or the item specified) to SurvivorsUK Ltd (Registered Charity No.
Codicil
For those who already have a Will and do not wish to re-write it but want to add a Codicil as authorisation for a gift.
If you are giving a percentage please ensure that the percentage is consistent with your original Will so that the combined total adds up to no more than 100% of your estate. If you are giving money please ensure that there is sufficient in your estate to pay this in addition to the bequests already in your Will.)
You should create a copy and complete the following document:
I (full name) of (full address) Declare this to be the 1st/2nd/3rd/other Codicil to my Will dated (date)
