About us

SurvivorsUK exists for men, boys, and non-binary people who have experienced sexual abuse, sexual assault or rape, or any survivor who thinks we’re the right fit for them.

We support – by providing services such as a helpline, counselling, ISVA and group work.
We challenge – by raising public awareness of the issue, and dispelling myths
We build – by creating and facilitating networks for better access to help

We provide emotional support, information and signposting to survivors and anyone worried about someone they know, through a national website and webchat service (open until 8pm most evenings). Last year, over 2,600 people contacted us via our webchat services and social media.

In London, we are the only organisation providing specialist services for men and boys, including individual counselling and therapeutic group work. Across London, we provide the capital’s only Independent Sexual Advisor (ISVA) Service that helps men and boys through the criminal justice system.

Purpose of Role

Sexual violence in prisons has long been ignored, leaving men without adequate support. Over the past year we have been part of a committee with HM Prison Service, Metropolitan Police and NHS England to create a service on responding to serious sexual assaults within prisons in London. We want to raise awareness amongst prison staff of the appropriate responses to sexual violence and gather information about the needs of male survivors in prison to inform future service provision.

As a Young Persons and Children Prison Counsellor, you will spend three days per week providing support to prisoners in HMP Feltham and Young Offender Institution. The main responsibilities of your role will include:

  • Provide counselling to prisoners, therapy and practical support interventions to men, boys, non-binary and trans people who have been raped, sexually abused or assaulted with high levels of need and who are most vulnerable.
  • Offering 6 months of therapy to clients.
  • Building partnerships and improve understanding of sexual violence and male survivors amongst London prisons staff.
  • Support prisons in understanding of the prevalence and need of male survivors in London prisons
  • Offer resources, coping strategies, and supported signposting to internal and external sources of expert help
  • Gather evidence for further services to be modelled.

This post is subject to an enhanced DBS clearance.

Desired Experience and Skills:

  • A BACP, UKCP or BABCP accredited counsellor or working towards, psychotherapist or CBT practitioner.
  • At least 2-years’ experience of working with highly vulnerable clients in a counselling and/or support service.
  • Experience of working within a prison setting.
  • Experience of managing a busy caseload, working under pressure and prioritising workload.
  • Strong understanding of the experiences, needs and impact of rape, sexual abuse or assault on (cis and trans*) men and boys, and on non-binary people.
  • Ability to form good working relationships and maintain professional boundaries with survivors in crisis.
  • Ability to communicate and maintain relationships with a wide range of voluntary and statutory agencies.
  • A commitment to delivering meaningful interventions and fostering innovation in working practice
